Can dogs eat sourdough?

I would like to start off by saying that it is NOT recommended for dogs to eat raw sourdough starter. If your dog has accidentally eaten some raw sourdough starter or dough you need to call your vet immediately.

The answer to whether they can eat cooked/baked sourdough products is, YES!

You just want to make sure that they only get these treats in moderation. As with anything, too much might cause your pup to feel unwell. So I usually limit these to 2-4 per day. I would recommend have a discussion with your veterinarian prior to feeding your dog anything new.

Will my dog like sourdough dog treats?

Dogs are interesting because their senses are VERY different from ours. While their noses are extremely advanced and accurate, their sense of taste is not. They have significantly less taste buds than we do. This is why dog food is often bland compared to what we eat. Luckily dogs don’t care for excessive salts and sugars in their treats. Even though we wouldn’t enjoy this recipe (my son can attest to this); your canine family member will think it is a wonderful treat. Because there are not a bunch of extra flavors in this recipe; it is very simple and uses basic ingredients you have in your house.

Ingredients

  • Milk: I use 3.25% milk but any milk will work.
  • Wholewheat flour: You can use any flour but the wholewheat creates the best dough consistency.
  • Sourdough discard: not active and bubbly. Can come straight from the fridge.
  • All natural Peanut Butter: L:ook for only nuts and salt on the label. You can use crunchy or smooth. I prefer smooth for the look of the dog treats.
  • Eggs: Large eggs are preferred.
  • Cooking Oil: I use olive oil but any kind of oil will do the trick.

How can I modify these sourdough dog treats?

I love this recipe because there are a number of ways to change the taste or look of these treats. Here are a few ideas:

  • Swap out the peanut butter for any other nut butter.
  • Add 1/4 cup of apple sauce or some pureed pumpkin.
  • Use different cookie cutter shapes for some fun designs.
  • Melt peanut butter and drizzle it on top to make them look really fancy!

Other Ideas for These Sourdough Dog Treats

I usually make a large batch of these and freeze them. That way I can just pull them out of the freezer when we are running low and they will be nice and fresh for our dog.

I make these as gifts sometimes! If someone we know just got a new puppy or as part of a larger family gift basket. Everyone loves seeing them because they are unique, useful and very cute!

  1. Are they supposed to be crunchy? Mine came out softer more like an actual biscuit

    1. Hi Andre,
Yes, they should be crunchy. Sometimes they turn out softer if you roll them out a little too thick or use a larger cookie cutter. Try leaving them out on a wire rack for 24 hours to become more crunchy and dry.
      Hope your dog enjoys them!

  2. Love the use for the sourdough discard! Not sure about the use of milk, though

    1. Hi Doris,
Thanks so much for the comment! I appreciate your concern for our fluffy companions as well. Rest assured that small amounts of milk is okay for dogs to have in moderation. If your dog does have a known milk allergy, you can swap the milk out for water. Have a wonderful day!
