Today is the first rainy day of the year. Under normal circumstances I would feel a bit frustrated or sad about the wet, dreary weather; however, today I am feeling full of excitement! This is because the first rain (and not snow) here in Canada means that spring is officially in the air! This is such a wonderful time of year because it reminds us of the new life and beauty that is coming our way in the summer. I find that this is a great time of the year to reassess my daily routine as a homemaker and start to incorporate some enjoyable spring additions. Come along with me as I share my simplified homemaking routine for spring.

Daily Simplified Homemaking Routine for Spring
The Quick Version of the Simplified Homemaking Routine for Spring
- Wake up and have a quiet coffee.
- Get everyone ready for the day with the right gear for the spring weather (boots, umbrellas, rainsuits).
- Get outside. Walk the dog and our son to the bus stop.
- Feed pets and now the returning wild birds.
- Take care of the spring seedlings that are currently inside.
- Do normal daily cleaning with one additional “spring cleaning” item each day.
- Do one baking item for an after school snack and prep food for dinner later.
- Pick up my son from school.
- Do a spring activity together (either outside or inside). For example, today we will be collecting worms for our garden. Tomorrow we will be decorating Easter eggs.
- Eat dinner.
- Head off to sports and activities.
- Last snack before the bedtime routine. I like to do fresh fruit for this in the spring.
- Bath time and bedtime. I always prep everything for the next morning before going to bed so that the relaxing morning coffee routine can start all over again.

Generally, my morning routine consists of having coffee with my husband before our son wakes up. We are early risers because this routine is so important to us. We get to chat, plan and reflect without distraction. This is special time for our relationship and it also starts the day off nice and calm.
All winter long I do lots of baking. Particularly my weekly sourdough bread baking. So by spring I tend to want a little break from this because we are outside more and spring sports keep us out of the house a little more than normal.
But, I do enjoy being a bit more creative with my baking this time of year. Here are some examples of what I have been enjoying making and eating this spring.
Easy Homemade Recipes for Spring

The next part of my day consists of me getting everyone ready for the day. This means feeding everyone breakfast and getting them off to work and school. In the springtime we try to be outside as much as possible so I make sure we all have proper rain gear and we enjoy our walk together down to the bus stop. Umbrellas, boots, and puddles make for a very simple way to have some fun!

Once I get back home, I will feed all the animals and make sure they are all healthy. We currently have a dog, a cat, and two bunnies in our family. In the spring we get more variety in the kinds of fruits and vegetables that are available in Canada so our bunnies get some extra special treats this time of year. Blueberries have been their favorite this spring!

In addition to all of our pets, I start feeding the wild birds again in the spring. This bring me so much joy! Everyday I make sure to top up the bird seed in the feeders to ensure that they are well fed and happy as they all return home for the warmer weather.

After all the animals are fed, I make sure to check on my flowers and vegetable seedlings that I started in early spring. I water and prune and ensure everything is growing well. Starting seeds early is a great way to save money when planting season is in full effect. A little work now will save you a lot of time and money in a couple of months.
My day to day cleaning and chores stays pretty much the same all year round. I have some simplified ways to make your daily homemaking routine more streamline in a previous post which is worth your while to check out. However, I do have some extra things I do in the spring in addition to the normal chores.

So lets talk about spring cleaning for a minute. This is something that can seems very daunting and not at all a simplified homemaking task. But I am here to tell you that it can be a really helpful thing to try to do in the spring. It makes the rest of your homemaking year much more efficient.
How to Approach Spring Cleaning
- Do little bits each day. Start with one drawer that really bugs you and then continue on from there. Here is an example of how to approach a single drawer in my post about organizing food storage containers.
- Make it simple. Have three piles ready when you start. One for keeping, one for donating, and one for garbage.
- Don’t be hard on yourself if you don’t get it all done this spring. I know its called spring cleaning but you can do this anytime of the year. Spring is just generally a less busy time for my family so I try to do what I can now.
Seasonal Changes to the House
Decorate for Spring and Easter

When I start to get spring time feelings I like to decorate the house with little pops of spring and easter fun. In Canada, we generally still get snow for most of our spring so I like to bring more color into the house with decorations. This gets everyone feeling joyful even if it is raining or snowing outside.
Start Your Seeds

If you are like me and enjoy gardening then this is a great time of year to start some of your flowers indoors. Flowers, such as Pansies, need a long time to grow before they start to flower so you can start them in early spring and they will be big and strong and ready to go outside by the time the night frosts are finished.
Getting your hands in the dirt and watching these little plants grow is a wonderful addition to your springtime routine. You will be so grateful that you started early when it comes time to plant out your garden.
Other flowers and plants that can be planted in early spring indoors:
- Assylum
- Marigold
- Pansy
- Petunia
- Peppers
- Eggplant
- Celery
- Onion
What you will need to grow your plants indoors:
- Seed starting tray (or grow set)
- Grow light (optional but useful for places like Canada where our springs are quite dark)
- Mini greenhouse (optional but nice to have)
- Potting soil
- Seeds (I order mine from West Coast Seeds)
Yard Tidy Up

This time of year my husband and I go around the yard and trim back any plants that got missed last fall. We also pick up leaves and pinecones that fell over the winter. It is nice to get out into the yard and start prepping and planning for the summer garden.
Other spring additions that bring joy in my homemaking routine are fresh cut flowers from the store, doing easter activities with my son, drinking fruity teas, making springtime themed cross stitch patterns, and starting to think about our Easter plans and meal ideas.
