Let’s Talk About Dough!

Dough ready to be made into balls for the cinnamon pull-a-parts.

You can honestly use any dough recipe you want for these easy homemade cinnamon pull-a-parts. That is what makes this recipe so great! It is really versatile and pretty much fool-proof!

I often have left over sourdough dough and I will use that up by making this recipe. However, more often than not, I have leftover vetkoek* dough and I end up using the leftovers for this recipe.

*vetkoek is an Afrikaans recipe for a deep fried dough that is eaten sweet or savory. Future recipe for this coming your way!

My point here is that I will be describing a very simple dough recipe for you but it is okay to follow the same instructions with any dough you like to make.

A few more notes about the dough:

  1. Make sure you give your dough the appropriate amount of time to rise before forming it into the pull-a-part balls. Sourdough will take longer than a recipe that uses yeast.
  2. If you have time, allow for a second rise once all the dough balls are in the pan and covered with the sugar mixture.
  3. You can do this with a wholewheat dough. It just might need a little extra butter because wholewheat tends to be a bit more dry.

When to Prepare This Recipe?

  • The night before: I like to prepare the dough in an airtight container with a lid and put it in the fridge the night before. This way I can pull it out and decide what I am going to make with it the next morning. If I decide to make these easy homemade cinnamon pull-a-parts, I simply throw it all together, allow one more rise, and then bake it.
  • The day of: This recipe has a pretty quick rising dough so you can make everything in the morning if you want to. Just give your self 20-30 minutes for the first rise and then 15-30 minutes for the second rise once everything is assembled. NOTE: I have definitely forgotten the second rise before and these still turned out great. So, just keep that in mind if you are in a really big rush.

Storing Cinnamon Pull-a-parts

This recipe is best enjoyed right away!

Full disclosure, I am currently eating some warmed up leftover cinnamon pull-a-parts as I write this post. It’s for research purposes of course. But, they still taste very nice the second day! They just aren’t something I would pull out for guests because they don’t look as nice and you lose some of the flaky edges when it has been in the fridge overnight.

I also wouldn’t recommend freezing these after you bake them.

If you decide to keep some leftovers, you can keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-4 days.
